The Arrival of LED Strobe Lights
LED strobe lights are a relatively new arrival in the emergency lighting marketplace. Lightweight, versatile, and energy-efficient, LED strobes are a significant improvement over previous models. Xenon strobe lights were the most commonly used type before the advent of LED strobe lights, and produced a bright-white highly visible light spectrum. However, these early xenon bulbs created a great deal of heat and required exceptionally high voltage power sources, making them hazardous for many uses and reducing their functionality in a variety of settings. Additionally, improperly timed strobe lights can cause seizures in some people; this can lead to serious medical complications or injuries if care is not taken to minimize the risk of such effects. While later xenon-bulb strobe lights were adapted to avoid these problems, the excessive heat and high voltage issues remained. LED strobe lights represent a major advance in the strobe lighting arena, since they are energy-efficient, cool to run, and pose fewer risks of electrical shock for users.
LED strobe lights are available in a wide range of styles and configurations including high-tech programmable models that can display a number of different flash patterns. This versatility makes them an excellent choice for first responders since they can be used in a variety of situations. LED strobe lights can be permanently mounted on the exterior of the emergency vehicle, installed inside the back window or on the dash, or even temporarily placed in the vehicle’s windows or magnetically attached to the exterior for even more flexibility of use. Handheld LED strobe lights can even be used as incapacitators to disorient and blind suspects; however, these LED strobe incapacitators are still being tested and are not in general use in the police community.
