Awesome Strobe Lights
For most people, strobe lights evoke images of night clubs, disco balls, and haunted houses. In the emergency services field, however, strobe lights are a vital part of the equipment used to protect and serve the public. Mounted atop police cruisers and ambulances, strobe lights help to alert oncoming traffic of accidents and emergencies and provide a valuable visual clue to motorists, often well before sirens can be heard. Strobe lights offer exceptional visibility, but caution must be used in their deployment since strobe lights that flash too quickly can trigger seizures in some individuals.
Strobe lights are used on a number of emergency and public works vehicles including fork lifts, towing company trucks and wreckers, police cars, ambulances, and fire department vehicles. Strobe lights are available in a wide range of colors, from bright white to amber to blue and red and even green. Low profile strobe lights are popular for larger vehicles, since they offer less wind resistance and do not significantly increase the height of such vehicles. Larger scale strobe lights are often used where more visibility is required. Self-contained power supplies are standard for some smaller-scale strobe lights, but larger, more powerful strobes are usually wired or plugged into the vehicle’s electrical system to allow more consistent and long-term functionality for these strobe lights. Emergency strobe lights can be mounted permanently on the vehicle or attached magnetically to allow later removal.
LED strobe lights are becoming more and more common due to their reduced operating costs, lower heat production and lighter weight. LED strobe lights serve the same purposes as traditional xenon bulb models, but typically cost less both initially and over the life of the lighting fixture. Strobe lights are one of the most versatile and compact forms of emergency lighting, with motorcycle pole beacons and microdash lights just a few of the options available to individuals and first response agencies.
