Police Lights - The Differentiating Factor.
Not all vehicles can have emergency lights installed on or in them. This is a safety feature that online emergency vehicles can use. Police lights are lights that differentiate between private vehicles. There are many police vehicles on the streets and it is important to understand the importance that these vehicles need right-of-way at the shortest of notice. That is why they are outfitted with emergency police lights - for that early warning signal.
It all began in the early 30s when police lights first came into use. Even fire departments made use of the brass bell to warn people to clear the way in an emergency. At that time it may have occurred to someone to come up with a device that would differentiate between emergency vehicles and private vehicles. The flashing red light on the roof of the police vehicles became known as emergency police lights and all vehicles with this light were associated with the police department.
It was only later that other departments began understanding the value of these emergency vehicle lights and began using them on fire fighters, ambulances and other emergency vehicles. Police lights had become quite a fashion statement during the mid forties that even private vehicles started sporting these lights and had to be controlled by law. Emergency vehicle lights were reserved for emergency vehicles and not for private use. However, the fashion bug had bitten the youth who wanted to decorate their vehicles with colored lights and so they designed their own but different lights. This gave birth to different forms of lights for vehicles but nevertheless, the light bars and emergency vehicle lights were reserved for official use.
Police lights have evolved from the early simple red flashing done on the top of the police vehicles to the modern police light bars of today. These are very energy efficient, cheap and easy to install. They are so light that they can be installed anywhere on the vehicle not only on the roof. However, protocol demands that police lights be installed on the roof of the police vehicle.
LED light bars have become the police lights of the day. These are ultra light and brighter than their incandescent cousins. LED light bars last much longer and have a lower breakdown rate than the earlier police lights. Even though it takes about a hundred of these rice grain size LEDs to produce the light a single incandescent light bulb would produce they still come cheaper and use a fraction of the power the bulb would use.
Police lights come in many designs. Though they are all light bars these days they have different combinations of colors and the number of lights also varies. Police lights can have as few as two pairs of lights or they can have as many as six pairs. The number of rows also increases accordingly from one to four. So, the next time you see a vehicle sporting police lights you should pull over and give way. It may be an offence to obstruct the movement of the vehicle in your area as it is in many states. Also if you want to decorate your vehicle with police lights you should think again - some designs are reserved only for police lights.
