Strobe Lights: From Novelty Use to Practical Application

Strobe lights were originally viewed as little more than a passing amusement; early stroboscopes were considered curiosities and little practical use was made of them. Photographers soon saw the potential applications of strobe lighting for high-speed photos, and strobe lights became an integral part of the earliest flash cameras. Early flash cubes incorporated six strobe lights that could only be used one time each; over time, the strobe lights used in flash cameras underwent significant improvement in terms of consistency and durability. Today, strobe lights are incorporated into a number of industrial and scientific devices and provide brilliant bursts of light that make them especially suited for emergency lighting use.

Strobe LightsStrobe lights provide superior visibility and can be seen for miles in some cases, making them an excellent choice for emergency services vehicles. Because strobe lights are so bright and flash so rapidly, it’s essential to use only strobe devices specifically designed for first responder vehicles in order to avoid unforeseen consequences. For instance, strobe lights that are not precisely calibrated to flash at a certain rate of speed may be responsible for causing seizures, especially in children or other susceptible individuals, so it’s vital to purchase the best possible strobe lights in order to avoid these problems. Additionally, most strobe light devices have specific instructions for vehicle installation which should be followed to the letter in order to prevent causing temporary visual impairment to other drivers. Strobe lights are extremely bright, and can have the same effect on eyes as direct sunlight; for this reason, most strobe lights are directed to the sides of the vehicle, rather than positioned to face directly forward or backward.

Strobe LightsStrobe lights can be used as emergency alert beacons as well as for public safety use. LED strobe lights are especially useful in this regard, since they are lightweight and can be taken along on camping and hiking trips and used to signal rescuers in the event the party becomes lost or injured during the excursion. LED strobe lights are used in police lightbars as well, since they are more durable and less prone to breakage and overheating than traditional strobe light bulbs. These advantages have contributed to the increasing popularity of LED strobe lights and, in many cases, these advanced lighting technologies have replaced older styles of strobe lighting devices.

Today, strobe lights are used in a wide range of emergency lighting applications; police cars, ambulances and fire trucks often feature a number of strobe lights in the lightbar installation. Strobe lights naturally draw the eye, ensuring that these public safety vehicles are readily visible day or night. Combined with a siren, strobe lights and other emergency lighting equipment ensure that police officers, firefighters, and ambulance workers remain safe even in high-speed situations and can carry out their duties without creating undue risk to themselves or to the general public. As a result, strobe lights continue to be one of the primary warning devices on most first responder vehicles throughout the United States.
