The Uses for Emergency Lights
Emergency lights are a necessity on many vehicles, especially those that are used by first response teams. These are not the lights that illuminate the road, but the flashers that tell other cars to clear the way. First response vehicles often have to travel faster than the speed limit or break other rules of the road -- they may have to run stop signs or go through red lights -- and the emergency lights are all that keep them safe so that they are not accidentally struck by another vehicle on their way to save someone else.
There are many different styles and colors of emergency lights, though the most common of these lights are red and blue and come in bars that can be fitted to the top of a vehicle. They also come in spheres and circles; these lights are most often attached to the front end of an emergency vehicle, either to the grill or the hood just in front of the windshield. These emergency lights are many times used in conjunction with other lights that are fit on the roof and back of the vehicle, giving it the ability to light the road in all directions.
Emergency lights are used by the police force, the fire department, and many other law enforcement agencies. The Border Patrol uses them on their vehicles, as does the Coast Guard. Even the military uses emergency lights, fitting them onto their vehicles if they have to be operating in urban centers. They know that they are often going to be operating in non-combat situations -- these lights would not be ideal for combat, as they would give away the soldiers' position -- such as helping with hurricane relief of evacuation in the case of a natural disaster. The military also has their own police force, and these officers will use the lights on their vehicles to set them apart from the standard army vehicles.
One of the most common and important uses for emergency vehicle lighting is on the vehicles owned by volunteer firefighters. These are so important because the cars owned by the volunteers do not look different in and of themselves. They are just normal cars and trucks. Therefore, it is impossible for other traffic to recognize the cars as emergency vehicles, and they would not get out of the way if the volunteer firefighter was trying to get to a fire quickly. These lights can help the volunteer arrive quickly and safely at his or her destination, which can in turn save lives.
As can be seen, emergency lights have many uses in modern society. Whether they are battery-powered and sit on the dash, or a bank of lights that sit on the roof, they are very helpful and assist in keeping officers of the law and other public servants safe when they are doing their jobs. These jobs are often very dangerous already, so lights can help to reduce the amount of danger that they have to face.
